A toy train track curved under a low table. It ran past a short shelf. The loop sat three steps from the wall. A blue button rested inside the loop, near the rails. An automatic gate dropped when the train rolled to the crossing. The red arm lifted after it passed, then fell again. Kit watched one full round, and he counted softly. Warm mist touched his cheek from a small humidifier. Steam puffed in little bursts near the wall.

The arm rose and held for three slow counts. Kit looked at the button and nodded once. "I can get it now," Kit said. He slid his hand over the rail and reached in. His sleeve brushed a stack of index cards on the shelf. He managed to retrieve the button with two fingers.

A top card slipped, then three more fanned and slid. One card traveled along the rug seam and went under the table. The train rolled on, and the gate clacked down again. Kit placed the button in a tray and reached under. Dust tickled his wrist, and he pulled the lost card out. He set the neat stack back on the shelf.
