English 原文
Paloma held the chilled-case door halfway open, her fingers aligning two straight columns of water bottles within the even fluorescent span.
She lifted the front bottle, a click answered under the rail, and the next one slid forward into the cleared space.
Cold air pooled at shelf height beneath the opening, a thin band of denser brightness along the glass.
Condensation left a thin glaze along the door’s lower edge, and the column ahead held a tiny disharmony where one label angled outward.
She pressed that bottle back to match the row, then paused with the door balanced, noticing the shelf’s runners forming two shallow channels.
The aisle extended as a measured corridor, cases in a strict line to the far wall and the magazine rack flaring at a diagonal.
The magnetic chime split the doorway with two notes as a restock cart rolled in, its stacked boxes narrowing the central aisle to shoulder width.
Merritt angled toward the hot counter, and Paloma left the door to let the cart pass between the chilled wall and the snack shelves.
The microwave’s square chamber closed on a packaged meal, and film domed inside the small volume while the countdown marked its contained minute.
Beside it, the slush drums turned their colored mixture under paddles whose slow sweep suggested a tiny submerged propeller.
“Warm enough,” Merritt said, cupping the wrapped item under the low bulbs while steam clouded, then thinned, against the inner glass of the case.
At the counter, coins met the smooth surface and slid in a bright cascade before the cashier’s hand gathered them toward the till.
Behind the counter, the locked glass case returned thin striped reflections at a shallow angle.
When Paloma returned to the chilled wall, the door’s condensation had gathered into clear beads, and the front columns now reached closer to the jamb.
She set her gaze level with the shelf and traced the runners toward the back, where they dropped a few millimeters against the rear stops.
The arrangement made its method plain; weight met a quiet slope rather than any hidden spring.
The top row sat high beneath a ceiling fixture, leaving little clearance to tilt the bottle free, and her hand hovered over the lower tier instead.
“This one,” she said to nobody in particular, drawing a middle-row bottle where space ahead was open and the ridge promised an easy slide.
Outside the glass front, a pale strip of travertine under the threshold held the day’s small wet prints in its porous face, steady and lightless.
On the counter, a thin plastic bag kept two open mouths—one cold, one warm—simple and side by side.
She closed the door until the latch nestled, carried the bottle to the counter, and set it beside the warm package inside the waiting bag.
