English 原文
The courtyard kept its winter hush, stone flags mottled with old salt, benches silvered where paint had flaked through cold seasons. A single ice block stood on a low trestle, clear enough to show air lines and faint ferning inside its heart. Score marks, pale and straight, crossed one face where an adult had laid guides, and a shallow pool ringed the base with soft shine. Xanthe stood in padded boots beside the platform, gloves braced on a rounded chisel, a wooden mallet resting against her sleeve. Elise watched from an arm’s length away, scarf tucked, eyes on the beam that slid through the block and spilled across the snow. Each strike would send thin chips outward like a light snowfall, and the fresh surface would gleam before frost dusted it dull again.
She tapped first along a guide, shallow cuts that respected the grain, letting the chisel bite and release with a bright, clean crack. A braid of grooves accumulated along the edge, then another, and another, until light scattered into thin threads that quivered on the snow. Sun angled through a high window pane, met the block, and concentrated into a bar that crept along the courtyard’s worn threshold. Xanthe lengthened the braid with more facets, shoulders leaning in, breath feathering her scarf as the mallet’s rhythm settled into easy count. New planes stacked against older ones, irregular and asymmetrical, each taking a share of the beam and sending it outward at its own slant.
Mid-swing, the mallet paused above the handle because the sound had changed; the ice rang thinner, and chips fell as a finer spray. A curved spill of color slid across Elise’s sleeve, glanced off the window pane, and ended as a pale lunar crescent on packed snow. Xanthe lowered the mallet, set her palm flat to the ice through the glove, and let the cold climb into her wrist by slow degrees. Heat from the courtyard had begun to revive a gloss along the base, and the neat edge she liked already softened to a darker line. She shifted her stance, narrowed the angle, and shaved away one ridge she herself had added, a bright ribbon that had only crowded the shape.
The beam gathered again, less fractured now, pressing a clear band through the heart of the block and sending one quiet stripe toward the steps. Frost crept back over the newest face; the braid pared down to a single curve held steady, and the figure’s essential line began to read. Elise’s boots stayed planted while chips drifted to her cuffs, and the mallet’s rhythm returned softer, with more space between each touch. Water ticked from the base into the ringed pool, a small sound under winter air, and the crescent on the snow kept its pale seat.
