The Drake at the Thawing Pond and the Circles He Made - 適合進階的英文短篇故事,含中譯與發音

English 原文
The drake tipped forward so his bright tail stood up, and neat circles widened from his bill across the pond.
Beside him the hen rode low, her back steady as a small hull, both bodies edged by a ring of darker, newly opened water.
Bea stood with Rhea on the muddy bank where meltwater ran in thin threads, and the air carried a faint calling from the reeds.
Cracks laced the pale center of ice, and little sheets drifted loose, their slicks catching light, their undersides clouded with trapped air.
Bea opened a small notebook and braced a page against her knee while her lines wavered whenever the ducks changed the water.
She traced ovals where the bill stirred silt and then erased them, because each oval slid outward and joined another, turning her sketch into a crowded motif.
When she pressed one finger flat to the ice edge, cold leaked upward and the surface dipped in a tiny concave cup that spilled back over skin.
Her pencil caught on a damp spot and left a fragmented smear that refused to look like either circle or feather.
She closed the notebook and set it on a dry tuft, then stepped sideways where pebbles lay and picked one whose flat face fit her thumb.
Her wrist sent the stone skimming over the open ring, and each kiss with the water built a chain of low ridges that raced toward the ice.
The ridges hit the white edge and fractured cleanly, bouncing back as smaller echoes that crossed one another and made the surface look woven.
Rhea crouched without speaking and flicked a reed head so seeds dusted the shallows and drew brief brown threads in the moving pattern.
Bea slid the pebble from palm to palm and then dipped the torn end of a reed into the ring, turning it slowly until silt budded around it.
Where the reed met the water, grains gathered against its side, and a clear lane opened behind, the same way the drake’s bill kept clearing the gray.
The circles she had chased on paper were not just circles, because each one tugged loosened specks toward the solid boundary and left brightness in its wake.
Across the ring the drake tipped again, tail sharp in the air, and the hen’s quiet back steadied the picture without needing to move.
Bea picked up the notebook, angled it away from the damp, and held still long enough to watch the retreating edge pull its dark rim inward.
Her shoulders settled as the ripples thinned, and the circles riding the hull-shaped backs became a map she no longer chased but could simply follow.
Bea lifted her pencil toward the drake.

Bea
