Old Nest and Pot Bubbles in One Beat -

English 原文
The doorframe kept a smooth patch at Elise's height, and her fingers found it without looking as the boards exhaled warm wood.
Above the step, three nests lined the eaves like small cups, the oldest thickened at its base and ribbed by a narrow grass ribbon.
From the highest cup came waves of chittering, quick as pebbles tapped together, then resting while pale throats closed and waited.
A parent skimmed the yard, curved back, touched the rim, and a row of beaks opened, three points making one near-syllable.
Elise's weight rose a little on her toes, and her hand slid higher to keep pace with those quick, small returns.
Beside her, the aunt stood just within the doorway, body easy and quiet, watching without stepping onto the path.
Inside, a lidded pot breathed along the stove with a soft stutter, three tiny taps, then steam eased into the room.
A wall clock kept its patient measure from the far shelf, second by second, each tick small enough to hide under conversation.
On the hall table, a glass terrarium caught a bit of the angled light, and the dome answered with a green-tinted luster.
Tiny fern fronds barely moved, yet a pill-sized beetle explored the moss, adaptable to the day's slanting cool and the stove's drift of warmth.
From the doorway, Elise heard four clock ticks, one quiet bubble, and the lid return to stillness.
Her eyes walked the beam to the oldest nest, where darker fresh mud-dabs sat against paler layers, their edges holding an unexpected sheen.
Near the base, three faint V-shaped dust prints stepped away along the board, a swallow's light feet written in powder from last week's sweeping.
That remnant held near her gaze, and the small dilemma showed plainly in her turning neck, up to the rim, out to the yard, back again.
A parent crossed through the same light as before and skimmed low, its wings tilting once, then settling near those three prints before lifting.
Elise let her feet flatten, and her fingertips returned to the patch of doorframe that fit them as if shaped by long practice.
Inside, the pot paused between sighs, then offered two neat bubbles that winked at the lid and made the spoon handle tick once.
The clock went on counting in a line nobody watched, and each even interval kept space around the kitchen's slower breath.
Light reached the terrarium again, and the curved glass brightened while drops on its inside wall slid one finger's width downward.
Moss kept its adaptable green under that dome, neither dry nor soaked, the little beetle threading a path across the damp grit.
From the hall shelf, the clock marked four more beats; the pot matched none and stayed still.
A sharp chitter met a single bubble under the lid, and Elise's breathing paused exactly on their join.
Her thumb found the grain and moved in that shared pace, two slow strokes, one halt, then forward once more.
The oldest cup no longer read as only weight and age; a bright seam of newer mud lifted faint light along the rim.
Three dusty Vs stayed nearby, each a balanced step that pointed away from the corner and back toward the yard.
Elise exhaled with the next merged beat, touched the smooth patch again, and kept her gaze on that bright-dark edge.

- terrarium
“Light visited the terrarium again; the curved glass brightened as slow beads slipped one fingertip’s length downward.”
- dilemma
“Her small dilemma showed in that wavering gaze, up to the nest’s rim, then out toward the yard.”
