English 原文

Tatum worked at the near corner, where the small-piece sub-stack rose no higher than his elbow.

An insulated water flask with two cups sat on the bench-bay, and the coarse cloth lay folded beside it.

He chose only pieces easy in one hand, set them on the low carrying-platform, and ferried them to the corner.

Clover tufted the dry ground near his boots, and a sweet, green smell rose when his heel brushed the leaves.

Beckett, in short leather gloves, moved the longer pieces along the inner wall, reading each end-grain before he stepped.

He placed bark-out and split-in without hurry, locking the course ends by crossing grain, then walking back for the next length.

Across the yard, the farmhouse roof showed a dull metal duct that caught a sunline and then dulled again.

Between Beckett’s courses, slim slots opened here and there, and a faint thread of air cooled his cheek as he passed.

At the corner, Tatum tried to conjure a smooth face from three knotty shorts, turning one, then another, hunting a steadier line.

The front bulged, and the top piece shifted a finger’s width toward empty space, so his hands paused midair.

The insulated flask’s cup tipped when he set it too near the cloth, a small arc of water sliding across the cloth.

Drops reached his fingers, darkened a bark edge, and the damp piece slipped a little when he tried to nudge it square.

He fixed his grip, wiped once on the coarse cloth, and stood still while the wobble quieted.

Beckett set his piece down at knee height, crossed the yard, and braced the sub-stack with both gloved palms.

No words moved between them; Tatum reset the short ends while Beckett held the face from rolling.

They traded one damp length for a drier one, then tucked a thinner slat crosswise, tightening the corner without hurry.

A stray clover sprig clung to a bark ridge, and Tatum rested it on the new top as if saving the spot.

Edges seemed to crispen in the shade at their feet, the cut planes showing their pale lines, straight and quiet.

Beckett returned to the wall and lifted his next length, and the corner held while Tatum loaded the platform again.

He kept to the one-hand pieces, chose the shorter ones first, and checked the front with a quick press of his knuckles.

Somewhere beyond the yard a single metal note tapped—the roof duct, perhaps—and then the afternoon carried on.

The main courses rose by hand-height again, the sub-stack grew by careful inches, and the clover leaf sat bright against dust.

Light fell across the bark and stayed, and the yard stayed quiet after both pairs of hands fell still.
