Amber Window Clears Under the Lamp in the Workshop -

English 原文
Amber pieces filled the workshop like a shallow tide, dull on their trays, a magnifying glass waiting, a desk lamp angled low over a sheet of white card.
Resin scent pressed into the air, and a mug left near the wall held stale tea the color of old varnish.
Dorian waited near the doorway while Hattie laid a soft cloth and set a coarse sheet of sandpaper.
She placed the lump she had chosen and propped the white card beneath the lamp.
Neat trays, labeled jars, and the clean circle of glass gave the room a laboratory air, though all the work stayed slow and ordinary.
She braced her wrists on the cloth, interlocked her fingers into a cradle, and began to work small even circles that warmed the resin under her palms.
With each pass, the dull skin thinned, scent rose brighter, and shallow scratches crossed and recrossed like rails on a tiny map.
A nub of a projection along one edge caught the grit and tugged, so she shifted the stroke to spare that corner for a finer paper later.
The lamp threw a pale oval onto the blotter, and the white card bounced light back into the piece until glare began to crowd the view.
Dorian leaned his elbows on the door frame, breathed through his nose, and watched the way the lump slowly gathered a window.
The bench grew busy: cloth loosened at the edge, the extra papers fanned into a half-moon, and the magnifying glass slid a finger's width across the pad.
Hattie paused, set both heels on the stool rung, and listened to the lamp's faint hum while the warmed amber pressed heat into her joined hands.
For a heartbeat the bulb dimmed and steadied again, and in that small dip a feathered line inside the piece stood out before the surface glare returned.
She slid the white card aside, let the darker bench hold the piece, and lowered her shoulders to bring her eyes close to the work.
Her circles slowed, the angle flattened, and the abrasive sang softer until a clear pane replaced the haze she had carried across the surface.
Through the lens now resting in her open palm, a slim rib of something plantlike divided into even branches, a pattern leaving room for inference without any label.
Dorian exhaled, the sound small near the blotter, while the piece cooled and the resin's sweetness eased back to its calmer thread.
The extra papers stayed stacked off to the side, the card lay flat against the wall, and the window she had made held steady under the lamp.
Hattie rested her chin above her knuckles and held still until the outline stopped winking.
Light touched the fine veins and stopped there, quiet and sure as the wooden bench.
