Magnifying Glass and the Rolling Pencil at the Grading Table -

English 原文
Delia slid the magnifying glass stand closer to the dish and tried to sharpen the view.
Under the lens, a bright flake showed a smooth outline against a thin crescent of black grains.
Her wrist bumped the stand, and the heavy base nudged a glass sorting dish along the table's smooth surface.
The first dish clipped a second, which bumped Xander’s wooden pencil and set it rolling along the smooth tabletop.
The pencil rocked, then rolled a finger-width before resting against his notebook’s bound edge.
Water murmured nearby, and the shaded atmosphere above the creek smelled of wet stone and creek moss.
They moved to the mineral diagnosis bench, where a white ceramic streak plate waited beside a small steel nail.
Delia placed the flake on the plate and drew it downward in one steady, narrow line.
A yellow line appeared on the rough surface, and her fingernail pressed the flake, leaving a small dent.
Xander recorded the streak and the dent in a field notebook, keeping the pages dry above the splashy edge.
He turned to the geological display board and scanned the racks of mounted samples for the matching colour patch.
The creek’s low sound mixed with a faint metallic tang, and cool air lifted dampness from their forearms.
The instructor stood near the shallow stones, eyes on the marked ledge and the ankle-deep flow.
At the specimen vial station, wet tweezers carried the flake into water, where it hovered like a quinoa seed.
Bubbles clung to the glass, and Xander logged time and place in his neat notebook.
Carrying the dish and notebook to the grading table, Xander set the notebook near the metal base.
Its corner nudged a loose pencil, which rolled and clipped the nearest glass dish at the lip.
The dish tipped, and its rim ticked the stand with a quick, bright tap.
Her other hand caught the dish rim and set it back flat with a careful press inward.
Delia steadied the base with two fingers and turned the focusing ring only a gentle quarter turn.
She lowered the dish under the lens and let her eyes scan the dark crescent without jostling the table.
One black grain still traced the ridge in a slow arc and kept circling, like a tiny planet sliding.

Delia
Delia
Delia
