Tomas had spent the morning crossing a ridge where thin birches rattled under a breeze from the north. The guidebook had warned that the plateau held an arctic climate even in late spring, yet he carried sketch paper anyway. He hoped to capture a crimson orchid said to bloom once a decade inside a sunlit glade beyond the ridge. If he had stayed in the village, he would have missed the rare chance altogether. Snow crusted stones forced him to slow, and damp moss darkened the knees of his trousers.
Near midday, a tangle of fallen pines blocked the marked trail; their trunks had been cracked by an earlier storm. Tomas dragged one branch aside, but splinters bit his palms and the gap remained narrow. He shifted his pack, crawled under the arch, and snow slipped from the bark onto his collar. Beyond the pines, breath-tight stillness settled, as if every twig waited. A grizzled wolf slid from shadow, its coat peppered with grey like ashes on dark fur. The animal tilted its head while his fingers froze above the pencil case strap. An unexpected turn came when the wolf dropped a smooth stick at his boots, then slipped back into the trees. Only after the creature vanished was Tomas able to breathe fully again.
Tomas picked up the stick; charcoal-dark stripes marked one end, as though fire had sharpened it earlier. He had been expecting petals, not pencils, yet the gift solved his missing charcoal problem better than any shop. Pressing forward, he reached the sunlit glade at last; sunlight poured through the spruce crown and lit the single orchid. He sketched with the burned stick, snowflakes melting on his hair while warm gold spilled across the page. He set the paper on a stump to dry. Sunlight rested across the finished page.
