A fresh salt smell fills air.

Lilac walks on plain wet sand.

Bright light glints on smooth pebbles.

Near a rock pool, Flora crouches.

Her small bucket lies sideways.

Striped shells scatter across the area.

One shell slides toward clear water.

"Shells escape!" Flora calls.

Lilac steps beside the pool.

Small crabs move like a team.

Seaweed rests like green vegetable strips.

Lilac reaches for the nearest shell.

It slips on slick sand.

She fetches a flat stick.

Her first push is gentle.

The stick slides under each shell.

She lifts and guides them back.

Flora holds the bucket steady.

"In you go," Lilac says.

Three shells drop with soft clicks.

Last shell skims the water edge.

A wave bumps the pool lip.

The shell bumps Lilac's ankle.

She nudges it onto the stick.

It joins the striped pile inside.

Flora sets the bucket upright.

Wet sand darkens under the bucket.

Both children kneel beside calm water.

A distant gull cry drifts past.

Foam crackles against the rocks.
