English 原文
A dull clang rang from the book-drop slot, then the carpeted air fell quiet again between shelves. Tobias inhaled a sour ribbon of returning-book dust mixed with the sweet vanilla tone of aging glue. He reached the catalog terminal, aiming to print one call number before closing so he could recount tomorrow’s story in class. Finn already occupied the keyboard, and burnt plastic odor from the warming screen drifted toward them while the search crawled. When the tiny printer finally whispered, the thin slip curled, hiding its final digit behind a ridge scented like dry pepper. Nearby, a stack of cloth-bound atlases exhaled a humid mushroom aroma that mixed with warm plastic from the desk lamp.
Tobias straightened the paper, but another curl formed the moment the stream of cool air from the vent touched the fresh ink. He tried guessing the lost digit and hurried toward the language section, mouth tasting chalky dryness stirred up by reshelving carts. A staff member began sliding wooden panels across that aisle, and musty cedar fragrance warned that the wing would close next. Through the panels he glimpsed a return cart loaded with linguist journals, translator manuals, and a slim volume smelling of old citrus. If he had kept chasing the blurred call number, that cart would have rolled behind the sorting door. He waited until the cart halted, then slipped the citrus-scented book from the top before it rolled on.
At the reading table Finn opened the volume, and ink vapour lifted while pages revealed linguistic puzzles framed by winding folk tales. Together they began to unravel one tale, tracing matching symbols, noses catching hints of lemon oil and dusty flannel from the paper. Finn pointed at a margin where someone had tried to recount the story in another script, leaving gaps like missing recipe steps. They copied those shapes onto spare paper, planning to finish the puzzle at home once the lights dimmed. The slot that had echoed earlier now hung quiet, its metal lip holding only a faint smear of graphite from passing returns.
