English 原文
A pale rectangle of dust marked the shelf where yesterdays thick atlas no longer balanced the starting tube.
Marco leaned over the vacant gap and scanned the carpet, expecting the heavy volume to glare under the lamp. Janet, beside the supply pile, trimmed a fresh cardboard length while the shelf, now book-light, drooped toward the carpet. Marco balanced on his knees and inspected the blue-grey ramp whose shallow slope drained speed like cool syrup. Cool light from the lamp pooled on the carpet, and shadowed tubes stretched like roads toward the wall. He pressed two fingers under a thin paperback, lifted slightly, and hoped to carefully prune only millimetres from the angle. The glossy cover slid slightly, the support creaked, yet the structure held, so he rolled the marble once to test again. It travelled farther, clicking over the steel-grey join, but settled into silence just before the translucent curve.
The sag held the glass sphere, and each second let moisture soften the cardboard, deepening the dip. Marco rubbed his chilled palms together, folded a spare index card, and slid the wedge beside the paperback for extra lift. The adjustment was tiny, yet enough to escalate the slope past the threshold where friction stole momentum. He sent the marble once more; it negotiated the sag, gathered speed, and rang against the landing bowls rim. A hallway vibration rippled through the carpet, nudging the central tube sideways until it skewed across a wooden block. Blue-grey reflections slid over the chrome scissors as the draft passed, carrying a faint vanilla note from the candle. Marco overcame the fresh wobble by steadying the block with both hands before any piece slid farther. Faint ridges from his tightening fingers now pressed into the frost-white card, marking the support long after the marble stopped humming.
