English 원문
Thin mist hovered above the cracked courtyard, and cool air slipped along the stone benches in uneven waves. Somewhere beyond the arch, pigeons beat their wings, and a faint bell echoed through columns. Leo had carried a box of brushes across the outer plaza earlier that morning, stepping around tourists who continued to saunter past the fountain. Now he crouched beside a faded circle that once framed a mosaic dance floor. The design had been painted with confident flair fifty years earlier; time, shoes, and weather had scraped it almost blank. Leo aimed to trace every lost line before the memory vanished entirely. He dipped a stiff brush into water, yet grit lodged beneath the bristles blocked each stroke. When he pressed harder, the handle snapped, leaving damp powder on the stone. If he had brought softer tools, the first outline might have stayed, but the stubborn surface answered with nothing except dull streaks.
He wiped his palms on his jeans, then tried a second approach. Rhythm mattered, he thought, so he tapped the chalk in measured cadence, hoping shorter touches would build a cleaner edge. Wind slipped through the corridor and scattered white dust across his knees. A distant rumble rolled overhead; Leo had wished for clear skies, yet clouds gathered too quickly to ignore. He had almost given up when the first drops splashed against the stones. Water darkened the surface, and unexpected shapes began to rise. Rain pulsed harder, washing away his chalk, but revealing fragments of bright glass hidden under packed dirt. The forgotten mosaic glimmered—indigo fish, copper leaves, and small ivory birds curled around the ring he had struggled to trace. If he had known a storm would help, he would have waited instead of fighting the dry crust all morning. Kneeling back, he watched sheets of water finish the work he could not. Colored tiles lay glistening under a thin sheet of rainwater.
