One boot pressed onto a low stool, bracing his knee so the beam stayed level. The measuring instrument, a worn brass protractor, trembled each time he adjusted his grip. To test the veracity of the angle he had earlier aligned the blade with a faint pencil line. A bulging satchel of spare hinges leaned against the bench leg and poked his calf when he shifted weight.

His elbow brushed the satchel, and its canvas corner nudged a tall jar of rinse water. The jar tipped forward, spraying a thin stream across the tabletop before spilling over the side. A drainage groove had been carved along the surface months earlier, yet the flow skipped past the channel. A faint resin smell hung under the slanted roof, mingling with cool afternoon air that slipped through the window. The water slid down the bench leg, gathered speed, and splashed into loose sawdust on the floorboards. Wet grains clumped, forming a sluggish paste that pushed outward in gentle waves as more water arrived. That slow upheaval rolled a scrap of veneer away from his boot and sent it skating toward the doorway. Beyond the threshold, muted hammering echoed from the distant plaza, unnoticed by the moving debris.

Quinn lunged, ribs stretching, and pinned the jar upright before more liquid escaped. He scooped the sliding veneer with one quick sweep, but the paste kept advancing toward a stack of freshly planed slats. Snatching a folded rag, he jammed it against the spreading edge and pressed until damp fibers ballooned. The cloth slowed the flood, yet a thin trickle slipped through hairline gaps between boards. Water dripped into the narrow drainage trench below the floor, its course now hidden from view. A dark ribbon kept creeping along the unseen channel toward the yard.
