A toy boat already drifted across the widest part of the courtyard puddle, its small paper sail flashing under the midday sun. Zander crouched beside the water, knees pressing the warm stone, eyes following the slow circle the boat traced. Adele stepped from the shade of a striped umbrella where their mother read, allowing honey-colored light to fall across her hands. She had planned to float a ring of flower petals around the boat before the mirror shrank too much. Beyond the low hedge, a pale canvas cabana sheltered gardening tools, and its bright wall reflected amber light over the paving. A sparrow dropped onto the bench rail, head twitching, then hopped nearer, as if the shrinking pool offered a temporary drink.

Adele let three pale petals nestle on the glossy surface, and faint ripples rolled outward until the water calmed. Heat pressed down; the curved edge of the puddle gleamed brighter and drew back, exposing crescent shapes of mottled stone. Each retreat left a chalk-fine line and lifted another pebble onto the drying shelf. A sudden breeze crossed the courtyard; the sparrow fluttered, its wings brushing the water and splintering Adele’s careful ring. She paused, watching tiny air bubbles tick against the new rim while Zander steadied his boat with one finger. Less mirror remained now, and their two projects competed for the same shrinking patch of calm. Adele lifted all but a single petal, slid it toward the branch shadow, and let it float alone beside the boat’s bow. The others dried against her palm, curling like thin parchment under the midday sun. Zander nodded, then inched aside so new rings could spread without touching the hull. A damp shadow cooled her knees, marking how far the mirror had travelled since her arrival. The puddle’s bright line slipped once more, and a final breath of wind carried the single petal gently inward.
