The first scoop of iron-red tumbled through the funnel and settled with a hefty amount of clumped ridges that pattered against glass, piling higher on one side because the scratch tilted the bottle ever so slightly. Sylvie wiped the funnel’s rim; a soft ring answered as metal met glass. The uneven mound blocked her thin wooden stick, so she relinquished it and chose a thicker one whose point scraped louder when it met the layer. If she had forced the slender stick deeper, the column would have collapsed in a single muffled rush. Instead, the broader tip pressed slowly, producing a wrinkle of mixed colours that crackled down the wall like distant rain on a roof. Coarse grains avalanched aside; finer white sand filtered into the gap with a gentle hiss, reinterpreting the ugly scratch as the spine of a feathered streak. Rafferty counted “three” under his breath when the new stripe reached the third dish level, the syllable almost drowned by the continuing patter. Sylvie traced the fresh crescent of mixed grains along the glass wall.
