Afternoon sun slanted through the school gym as Milo carried a life-size cardboard ostrich toward the exhibition tables. The floorboards creaked under scattered boxes, and banners drifted above the rows. Each project had been arranged earlier, yet an empty spot near a squeaky cart remained. Milo had spent evenings cutting feathers from recycled paper, spreading glue that dried smoothly across the wings. Under approaching scrutiny from roaming judges, the bird needed to stand tall. He lifted the lightweight frame onto the table, but the surface tilted, nudging the long neck sideways and sending a stack of brochures sliding to the floor.

Milo propped the legs with erasers, tested the balance, and saw the neck quiver again. Around him, classmates whispered about pecking order, comparing grand volcano models and sparkling robots. The chatter drifted past while Milo searched for stronger support. A spool of invisible fishing line lay near a toolbox; it had been left behind after a kite demonstration. He looped the line around a ceiling hook and tied it beneath the ostrich’s beak. The model straightened, yet the nearest bulb flickered, then blinked out completely, leaving half the corner in shadow. If Milo had known the bulb would fail, he would have chosen a brighter corner.

Within the sudden dusk, the crowd pressed closer. The fishing line contained microscopic beads of luminescent paint from last month’s art lesson; under dim light, the thread shone a pale mint colour. A faint, luminous halo traced the bird’s outline, making the ostrich appear to hover above the wobbling table. Gasps rose; phones lifted for photos. The judges paused, their clipboards lowering as the glow held steady. Milo stepped back; his hands dropped while the murmurs thickened. Light from the opposite window finally reached the spot, yet the gentle radiance remained. Soft green outlines rested on the quiet table.

米洛用橡皮擦墊住雙腿，再次測試平衡，仍見鴕鳥頸部微顫。四周同學談論著「誰的作品排位最高」，火山模型與機器人閃爍其間。交談聲飄過，米洛尋找更強的支撐。工具箱旁有卷透明釣線，先前風箏示範後遺留在此。他把線繞過天花板掛鉤，繫在鴕鳥喙下，模型終於挺直。但最近的燈泡閃了兩下便全暗，角落瞬間半黑。如果米洛早知道燈泡會壞，他就會選更亮的位置。

薄暗中，人群靠得更近。釣線上殘留上次美術課的夜光顆粒，在幽暗裡浮現淡淡薄荷綠。微弱光暈勾勒出鴕鳥輪廓，彷彿漂浮於顫動桌面。驚呼聲此起彼伏，手機紛紛舉起。評審停步，夾板放低，那圈光仍然穩定。米洛退後，雙手自然垂落，耳畔議論更密。對面窗外的光線終於照到此處，而柔和輝光依舊。柔綠輪廓靜靜停在安靜的桌面上。
