English 原文
Maris crossed the paved square just as the glass panels above the central fountain began to rotate with the breeze. Each panel was edged with tiny prisms, and their slow movement scattered shifting hues over the stone. Her camera rested against her chest; she raised it, hoping to capture the moment when sunlight, water, and glass overlapped. The square’s usual chatter softened, replaced by the rhythmic splash of the fountain, and even the pigeons paused as if measuring the new pattern of light. Within that shimmering presence, ordinary buildings framed a scene that already felt slightly evanescent, fleeting the instant it appeared.
She pressed the shutter too quickly—the first image drowned in glare. A step backward placed her heel on a loose pebble; balance wavered, the camera tilted, and droplets leapt from the fountain, peppering the lens. Maris wiped the glass, exhaling as a metallic clatter behind her drew several heads: a cart of folding chairs had lost a wheel. Ripples widened across the pool, confusing the reflection she wanted. She crouched, touched the cool rim, and waited while the wind rearranged the panels yet again.
A sudden hush cut through background noise. The panels spun into an unexpected alignment, and a streak of turquoise slipped across the water’s surface. For one suspended second, the outline of a mermaid appeared inside the fountain—a mosaic laid on the basin floor but usually masked by spray. Strands of tile formed hair that seemed to drift; a pearly tail curved around a hidden drain. Two children gasped nearby, and Maris, surprised by the flawless timing, fired another shot. This time the glare had vanished. The image glowed in the preview screen, every scale outlined by liquid radiance.
The breeze faltered; panels slowed, and light patterns calmed into steady bands. People resumed their conversations, chairs were gathered, and the square regained its usual rhythm. Maris lowered the camera, fingertips still cool from the stone edge, and watched the panels settle into near stillness. Soft ripples in the basin caught the lingering radiance.
