Sam stands under a tree.
A small bird chirps above.
The sound rings above Sam.
Sam starts to go up.
The first branch stays high.
His hands miss the branch.
Soft wind moves loose leaves.
Sam wipes dust from shoes.
He steps back and waits.
A stump rests near the trunk.
Sam steps on the stump.
He grabs the low branch.
His feet climb slowly higher.
Light shifts through the branches.
Leaves brush his arms lightly.
Tiny insects buzz near bark.
A bright bird darts down.
It lands beside the stump.
Sam pauses and watches it.
The tree stays still.
