Milo pushed a creaking door and entered the dusty attic just before twilight painted the rafters. Grandfather had stored an ancient brass telescope there, considering it part of the family heritage. The wooden case had been hidden beneath quilts, and its metal tripod looked surprisingly durable. When Milo lifted the lid, a loose hinge clattered onto the floor and rolled behind a crate. He knelt, searched through curls of cobweb, yet the small screw that held the hinge remained missing.

A chill draft crossed the attic, scattering dust in spirals while a profound hush settled after the clatter. Milo inspected the telescope; the focus wheel had been frozen by rust after years of neglect. He dabbed a drop of sewing oil, waited, then tried turning the wheel with steady, gloved fingers. It shifted a little, but the image of the nearby chimney still blurred and wobbled inside the eyepiece. If he had ignored the blurry outline, the coming meteor shower would have appeared like a pale smear. He unscrewed the cracked lens and replaced it with a spare magnifying glass salvaged from an old lantern. Clouds began to expand across the darkening sky, and he hurried to finish before the first stars vanished.

At last the wheel moved smoothly, and the chimney stones stood sharp inside the circle of glass. When Milo pointed the tube upward, a silver streak cut the heavens, brighter than any shooting star. The comet’s tail reflected through the spare lens and projected swirling lights onto the attic wall. Those lights revealed faint engravings on the inner lid that no one had noticed during earlier repairs. Unfamiliar letters lined the inner curve, older than the polished brass and unlike any on Grandfather’s maps. Soft starlight rested on the polished telescope beside the wide open window.
