Liam carried a small cake along Maple Avenue. He planned lunch in a bright restaurant with his sister. The city enjoyed a spring holiday, so traffic slowed him. A closed gate stopped his normal shortcut through the park. He could still reach on time if he hurried. He checked his watch and turned toward the riverside path. Shops offered balloons, and children waved sparklers near the curb.

He turned left, but a long parade filled the road. Music rose, balloons floated, and dancers blocked each corner. One trumpet slipped, sending streamers across his shoes. Streamers clung to the cake box and hid the latch. He knelt, pulled them away, and a bus horn sounded. The horn startled dancers, who stepped back and opened space. Liam slipped through the gap and reached the restaurant door. A delightful smell drifted from the kitchen window. Inside, the cake remained neat, and the celebration could begin. He set the box on the table.
