Mateo had spent the morning on an exploration around the forest, scanning every branch for unusual patterns. The most vivid shimmer now clung to an insect resting on a bright leaf across a narrow brook. He adjusted his camera; a low hum rose from the water, then quieted. The path toward the opposite bank had been marked by faint footprints, yet fresh rain loosened the soil. His first stride sank up to his ankle, mud gripping his boot. Cold water slipped over the rim of the boot and cooled his toes. He stepped back, wiped the lens, and studied the stones scattered like uneven stairs.

The stones offered a tempting bridge, yet every second surface wobbled under his weight. Halfway across, one flat rock tilted, and his knee plunged into the brook. The fall jostled the strap, and the lens cap was swept away before he could grab it. If he had spotted a bridge earlier, he would have strolled across without concern. Rising again, he balanced the camera on a patch of moss and searched for a sturdy branch. The branch cracked once, but its broken end revealed firmer ground beneath the water.

The final hurdle appeared when the last visible stone slid under a swirl triggered by the branch. He waited until the surface calmed, pressed the branch downward, and shuffled forward step by cautious step. The journey across the brook had cost him wet boots, scraped knees, and a missing lens cap. Yet the leaf still held its occupant, though a dull clicking now replaced the earlier hum. He leaned closer; tiny gears shimmered under the folded wings, glinting like morning dew. Some patient hand had crafted a clockwork marvel and left it here among real creatures. He clicked the shutter anyway, and droplets scattered as the metal wings snapped shut. Water pooled around the tiny metal legs on the green mossy stone.

最後一道難關出現時，最後一塊可見的石頭被枝條攪出的漩渦吞沒。他等水面平靜，再把枝條壓下，謹慎一步步挪向前。橫越溪流的過程讓他濕了靴子、擦破膝蓋，還弄丟鏡頭蓋。不過那片葉子上的生物仍在，只是先前的嗡鳴變成沉悶的喀噠聲。他湊近，收摺的翅膀下微小齒輪在晨光裡閃亮。有位細心工匠留下了這隻機械奇蹟，任它與真實生靈為伴。他仍按下快門，金屬翅膀合起時水珠四濺。水珠在綠色苔石上，細小金屬腳邊匯成一圈水窪。
