Soft morning sunlight slowly warmed the small park.
Mia carried a tiny sound recorder in her bag.
Her project needed clear bird song for science class.
She stopped under a lively maple near the pond.
Bright leaves moved with a gentle breeze overhead.
Short chirps echoed between the branches and water.
Mia placed the recorder on a wooden bench nearby.
She counted ten seconds then turned to watch ducks.
A sudden gust slid the recorder across the bench.
The small device tumbled and rolled under the seat.
Mia knelt, but her fingers could not reach the recorder.
She looked around and saw a thin stick on ground.
She poked the stick under the seat and dragged it.
The plastic body scraped against pebbles and turned upward.
At that moment, a wild eagle swept across the pond.
Its broad wings stirred air and startled smaller birds nearby.
Loud cries filled the microphone before Mia pressed stop.
She replayed the file and heard flapping then clear silence.
An unexpected scream from the eagle followed the flapping noise.
Mia's lips lifted in a hopeful curve as she listened.
She saved the clip and closed the recorder.
