Both workers below had promised a rehearsal for the evening fireworks, and the harbor offered the clearest line of sight. Space remained tight. A sudden flutter disturbed the quiet arrangement. A magpie swooped low, snagged the silver lens cap from Jonas’s open bag, and flapped toward the gutter. Jonas lunged, missed, and his heel struck Mira’s small water jar. The jar tipped; water rolled across the roof, swept a stray charcoal nub, and splashed against the gutter pipe. Mira steadied the tripod before the camera toppled, her palm skidding on wet stone. The bird reached the pipe, lost its grip, and the cap rang down the metal like a coin. Sunlight burst through scattered clouds at that instant, striking mist from the earlier rain. A faint rainbow arched over the distant cranes, its colors wavering against industrial grey. Jonas crouched, lifted the damp cap, and twisted it onto the lens; the thin smear of water on the glass could have ruined an invaluable shot. Without speaking, Mira nudged her stool back beside the camera so both frames could share the bow of light.
