The school sandbox spreads under a bright afternoon sky, and sand sticks to every arm. Carla and Ben have worked for almost an hour, packing wet sand into square towers. Their goal is clear: a sand palace tall enough to impress the art club judges. A soft breeze slides grains over their feet; the air smells of sunscreen and warm plastic buckets. Blue glass beads wait nearby, ready to become a shining oasis beside the main gate. Carla tips a final bucket, and a loose dune already leans toward one corner, threatening the southern wall.

A sudden gust arrives, and the first tower is flattened by wind-driven sand. The friends hope to overcome the collapse, yet the water tap stands across a crowded path. Their quest slows while the palace dries. Ben grabs a half-full sports bottle that rests behind a bag; droplets darken the sand, tightening the corners. Just as they smooth the gate, a playful dog escapes its leash and bounds through the sandbox. One heavy paw lands in the soft doorway, leaving a deep print. Carla blinks, then carves around the dent until the mark turns into a graceful arch. When the judges approach, sunlight touches the new arch and the tiny oasis. Both children step back, their sandy hands still raised.
