Lucas pushed open the attic hatch, and dust drifted through a narrow beam of afternoon light. At the center, a half-finished jigsaw puzzle waited on a folding table. He had been curious about its final picture since he had found the battered box under magazines last weekend. Several corners had been damaged by damp air, so he slid a thin sheet of plastic beneath them for support. A crumpled paper list lay beside the board; earlier, he had numbered each edge piece to track progress. Warm air pressed against the rafters, carrying the smell of dry wood and old ink. Lucas rubbed his palms, selected the next fragment, and tried to lock it into place.

The fragment refused to join; the cardboard tabs bent backward, and Lucas set it aside. Hairline cracks branched out across the wooden tabletop, and one leg wobbled whenever the wind rattled the roof tiles. He slid a brightly painted building block under the shortest leg, tested the steadiness, and returned to the puzzle. The stubborn gap turned his quiet sorting into a kind of critical thinking exercise, yet each rotation ended with the same dull click. If he had grouped by color first, he would have saved time, but guessing felt livelier. Outside the skylight, clouds drifted past, and a far train horn echoed, then dissolved into silence.

After another hour, only one hole remained in the center. Lucas checked the box, swept the floor, and lifted the plastic sheet; nothing fit. He stood still, and soft grit pattered against the glass. Finally he tipped the box upside down; a small wooden cube rolled across the board. Its smooth faces showed faded letters from an alphabet toy. He pressed the cube into the empty space, intending only to measure. Against logic, the mismatched edges locked together, clicking like a secret catch. A single wooden block rested among the scattered cardboard shapes.
