Thickness in the Quiet Meadow-

English 原文
Cardboard mixed with dry ink drifted from the open puzzle box, while the hallway clock sent a steady tick toward the table.
Sara listened for the shallow clicks that marked progress and aimed to nurture her growing meadow corner until it touched Reed’s distant hill. Chair legs groaned each time she leaned, and loose pieces shuffled like autumn leaves across the felt. She slid a bright sky tile into an empty gap; the click sounded right, yet a faint rock echoed under her fingertip. She pressed again, but the thicker quercus-coloured edge would not lie flat. The wrong piece had been forced twice already, and a small oath she had made—to finish the lower border before the snack bell—now sounded louder than the clock. If the cardboard had been thinner, it would have disappeared among the others.
Reed’s sleeve brushed her arm, and three connected meadow tiles rattled loose, scraping softly as they broke apart. “Oops,” he muttered, gathering the cluster; the hum of their overlapping movements filled the pendant lamp’s circle. While Sara rebuilt the shaken corner, the stubborn thick tile lay beside her wrist. Its extra height tapped the felt whenever she nudged it, and the muffled thump sparked an idea. She drew the impostor across the centre scatter; every piece that rocked with the same hollow beat joined a growing pile in the spare tray. Reed joined the rhythm, lifting each suspect piece and letting it thud once for testing. Among the rejects she spotted a tiny lumberjack waving from a treehouse—definitely from another set. Soon the meadow gap reopened, and a true sky tile clicked in without echo. Their two sections now kissed at one clean edge, and the ticking clock lost ground to the soft chorus of proper fits. A neat stack of thicker pieces cast short, uneven shadows beside the felt.
