English 原文
Flat afternoon light washed through the abandoned courtyard, warming cracked tiles and a stone pedestal near its center. Mila carried a small brass sundial she had built from workshop scraps and set it on the pedestal with careful, measured movements. Jonas, an apprentice engineer from the nearby factory, unpacked pencils and a folded chart covered with numbers. Air smelled of dry leaves and machine oil drifting from distant vents. A fountain basin held still water reflecting patches of cloud that crept across the sky. Their shared intention was simple: mark the true noon line before the weekend ended.
First, Jonas rotated the sundial until the gnomon pointed loosely north, yet the shadow refused to fall along his penciled curve. He produced a brass compass, but its needle shook beside the iron bench, offering no stable reading. Mila steadied the base with folded cardboard; still, a light breeze nudged the device and smeared the fragile line. Jonas traced an analogy between the stubborn shadow and a classroom pointer that never reached the blackboard exactly on time. They tried a second rotation, tightening screws, but drifting clouds dimmed the courtyard and erased every mark again. From the fountain rim, a droplet fell, rippled outward, and tapped the pedestal with a tiny metallic click.
When sunlight finally pierced the thinning cloud, it struck a broken bottle near the pedestal and split into a narrow spectrum. Bands of violet and green swept across the sundial and revealed a slight tilt no compass could show. Mila shifted one foot, pressed both palms against the brass rim, and eased the plate until the colors lay in perfect rings. Shadows now matched the penciled noon curve, and Jonas copied the final position onto his chart without speaking. Soft rainbow bands rested across the brass plate.
