Ben lifted a dusty wooden box onto the community hall table. The lid stuck for a moment, then flaked paint cracked away. Inside lay envelopes whose corners had curled under long summers. Neighbors come together around the box, eager to study the brittle ink. They write letters to replace pages that rain had already spoiled. While they share memories, small flecks of dust drift across the floorboards. Warm light crossed the faded maps, and faint wood smoke hung in the rafters. By nightfall they hope to seal each envelope inside a display frame.

Rain started tapping the roof, and a thin trickle pierced a loose shingle. The water slid along a beam, then dripped onto an open envelope. Ink was smeared at once, and the drip spread across the table edge. Drops gathered, overflowed the wood grain, and raced toward a box of stamps. Mila slid a metal tray underneath to provide assistance before the stream reached wood. Ben fetched a spare sheet of tin, which had covered paint pots outside. Together they make a plan with nods, then wedge the tin under the leaking tile. Water now lands on the tray and slides along its rim. It drops into a bucket resting beside their boots. Ben tightens the last screw on the frame and closes the box of letters. Outside, rainwater pours off the new tin sheet toward the gutter below.
