A steady hum rolled from the washing machine as Grant carried a damp bundle toward the stairwell. The grey cat, curled beside the steel-grey door, lifted its head when the pipes above rattled. Grant had planned a quick dash up to the rooftop clothesline before future clouds covered the sky. He nudged the laundry cart forward, yet uneven wheels rubbed against the pale tiles and slowed him. Water pressure shifted. A thin spray burst from a loose hose behind the washer, scattering bluish light across the floor. He wiped his sleeve across his cheek, then angled the cart around a mop bucket balanced near the wall. The bucket looked firm, but slight uncertainty in its stance made him hesitate.

Before he could adjust, the cart grazed the bucket’s rim. The apparent stability was a fallacy; the bucket rolled, sloshing cool water across the silver tiles. The spreading sheet slid under Grant’s foot and pressed against the rubber wheel. Momentum carried the cart into a leaning broom, which tipped against a stack of plastic crates. One crate toppled, striking the ceiling panel that hid an old trapdoor to the stairwell landing. The panel swung open. A folded ironing board that had been stored above dropped like a lever onto the cat’s empty spot. If more crates fell, his path back to the corridor would narrow. Startled by the noise, the cat bounded down the corridor, tail tracing arcs through the fluorescent haze.

Grant pivoted, planted both palms on the board, and shoved it sideways. The board blocked the rolling bucket, stopping further spill. Its edge now jammed under the trapdoor and pinned it half-open. Crates lay scattered, water kept running, but the chain had lost force. He gathered dropped socks, wrung them once, and draped them over the broom’s cool handle. A remarkable echo of dripping spread upward through the stairwell. Overhead, the laundry room lights shimmered on the puddles. Foamy water still streamed along the silver gutter toward the balcony drain.
