A faint drip slapped onto the tiled floor where a detergent bottle normally waited beside the sink. Luna crouched, ran her hand over the damp shelf, then turned toward the lone washing machine humming in the shared laundry room. She had stacked her clothes inside a shallow cardboard gift box to keep them sorted. That box now balanced on the vibrating lid. Pipes near the ceiling clanged each time a neighbor upstairs opened a tap. The bursts added a metallic beat to the deeper drum of the washer. The grey cat from apartment four padded in, nails clicking against concrete, ears twitching at every echo. Luna squeezed between a mop bucket and the wall to reach the shelf above, hoping to find a spoonful of forgotten powder.

Only a cracked plastic scoop remained; she tipped its last grains through the narrow mouth of the detergent drawer. The machine shuddered harder under the renewed load, and the gift box tilted, sliding toward the edge. Its ribbon, which had been wrapped by someone long before, snagged a protruding bolt, yanking the box sideways. Cardboard smacked the rickety shelf and knocked the scoop onto a metal pipe. The scoop rumbled downward, struck the floor, and rolled against the cat’s paw. Startled by the sudden clamor, the animal sprang onto the mop handle. The falling broom wedged across the vibrating machine and the wall, arresting the wobble before anything heavier could tumble onward. Above, dappled sunlight flickered through the half-open balcony door, striping the corridor with pale bars that quivered to each leftover shake. Luna steadied the gift box, then gave the cat a gentle stroke that reassured it enough to stay nearby. Water pipes thumped again, yet the drum kept turning. Inside the washer, buttons rattled like tiny marbles in a jar, marking every restless spin. The braced broom quivered against the wall.
