Fine grit had filmed the blue-grey slide since yesterday’s drizzle, and Cora brushed the pale surface with her sleeve as she entered the playground beneath the concrete overpass. Beyond the mesh fence, a silent river touched a small quay, while a green foothill rose farther back, its ridge faint behind cool morning haze. The swing set stood ahead, steel bars reflecting thin light, but one low seat hung twisted so tightly that its chains formed a rigid knot.

Cora’s boots squeaked against the damp rubber tiles as she tried to spin the seat straight. The links refused to move; each tug only made the knot harder. She stepped away, spotted a plastic shovel half-buried in the sandbox, and used it as a lever between two tight links. The metal shifted, then locked again. Raindrops returned, scattering across the chrome frame. If the shower grew heavier, the slide would soon gleam like glass and children might leave, yet the stubborn knot still blocked the swing. She wedged the shovel deeper and pressed her weight until a sharp clink rang out and one chain slid loose by a finger’s width.

A sudden cold current of rainwater rushed from the slide’s end, sweeping sand grains around her boots and carrying the shovel toward a drain. She caught the handle just in time, reset her grip, and twisted once more. The knot unwound in a slow spiral; the seat turned, level at last. Cora tested the free swing with a light push, droplets scattering from its silver edge, then walked toward the fountain to rinse sand from her hands. A speckled pigeon tilted its head, then stepped through the thin current and sent ripples across the steel-grey puddle.

此刻，冰涼的雨水在溜滑梯末端匯成細流，捲起沙粒衝向她的靴子，也把鏟子帶向排水口。她迅速抓住握柄，重新用力，再扭一次。結慢慢解開，座椅終於恢復水平。柯拉輕推空鞦韆，水珠從銀邊飛散，然後走向飲水台沖去手上的沙。斑點鴿歪著頭，踏過細流，在鋼灰色水窪上掀起一圈圈漣漪。
