The visitor pathway was swept clean, but the bronze rail beside the lion enclosure felt gritty under Vega’s fingertips. Mid-afternoon warmth soaked through the flat paving stones, making the wide boulevard ahead glow like dull copper. She shifted her shoulder bag and hurried toward the elevated deck facing the red-panda shelter. The feeding-show clock above the map kiosk promised only thirty minutes left. Paint on the directional arrows had been rubbed thin; the metal corners of benches had grown smooth where countless hands had rested. One plank carried deep grooves: someone had chosen to carve overlapping leaves into the wood long ago, each line dry and splintered now.

When Vega reached the rail, the cool bar pressed against her forearms. The enclosure below lay still; the red panda hid inside a wooden box that resembled a pale stone casket pushed against the rear wall. Heat from the concrete rose without mercy, prickling the skin under her elbows. Trial and error followed. First she crouched, then she stood on tiptoe. Finally she edged left toward a ladder-shaped section of railing for a higher angle. Each move won only a new view of empty bamboo. A keeper’s cart rolled past; the exhibit beside hers closed for cleaning, and distant lemur calls echoed through hot air.

She breathed out, waited, and copied a child nearby who tapped the rail with a soft rhythm. Vibration ran along the metal and into her palms. Moments later, a striped tail unfurled like a slow ribbon; the red panda climbed onto a branch, claws rasping against dry bark. Its fur brushed the leaves, shaking loose pale flakes that drifted across the deck. The keeper nodded from below and slid a bowl of fruit closer. Vega leaned forward, letting the rough rail edge press a line across her skin. The small creature might vanish again at any second. A faint straw scent lingered.
