English 原文
Rain had left a narrow smear across the bronze plaque beside the map kiosk, and Zara’s trainers squeaked when she halted on the wet stone. Somewhere behind her, a cage latch rattled twice, then the low boom of a gong rolled through the treetops—harbinger of the reptile house’s next closure. Chirps, grunts, and the thin whistle of distant macaws tangled overhead until a brief hush arrived, a truce carved by the wind between two passing school groups. On the ground, a round green disc lay half-pressed in mud, its edge catching the clack of stroller wheels. She prised it free; resin still glossed one side as if bonding glue had been applied only minutes earlier.
A feeder speaker on the footprint trail gave a muted blink. Three tokens were needed to wake the recording, but Zara counted only one in her palm. A loose fellowship of bright caps drifted closer, their chatter forming odd harmony with the rumbling lion enclosure, and space along the rail narrowed. She nudged a leaf and heard a faint tap—second disc against concrete. It slid into the slot; the machine only hummed. A staff cart creaked past; vibration shook a third token from a crack beside the measuring stick. She hesitated, then crouched despite the damp, letting grit scrape her knees. The final disc clattered in, and every diode on the panel flared white for a heartbeat before the threshold flipped; a deep croak burst from hidden speakers, echo spilling along the metal rail.
The recorded call faded, yet a living frog answered from reeds behind the glass, its sharper pitch threading through the remaining drone of visitors. Zara turned the first disc over; an embossed footprint now shone clean of mud. She pinched the edge carefully and, without speaking, pressed the replay pad once more.
