English 原文
Wood scraped across stone, then a vendor’s ladle rattled against a metal rim. Flora paused at the first row of awnings, nose twitching at roasted cumin and hot sugar melting together. She had promised to carry a small clay vessel of river herb paste to her aunt. The aunt’s pale bungalow stood beyond the quay, yet one ingredient was still missing: dried sea lettuce. The market shifted like a tide; every step brought new swirls of vinegar, smoke, and damp hemp. When an elderly seller waved polished shells, she searched for greens instead. She kept the recipe quiet, unwilling to confide its secret seasoning to strangers.
Near the fish stalls, the air turned briny; crushed ice and sliced lemon mingled with the metallic scent rising from tin buckets. A slippery goby wriggled free from one tub, splashing sour water onto Flora’s sandals and blocking her path to the herb table. She wiped her toes on a sack, reached again, and met resistance. The last bundle of sea lettuce lay stuck beneath a heavy crate. She nudged it, but the crate merely creaked. Kent, arriving with flour-dusted palms from the bread booth, crouched beside her. Together they tipped the edge; stale yeast floated up while the crate shifted enough for her fingers to grip the damp bundle.
As she straightened, a sudden gust carried charcoal grit through the lane, masking every other aroma. Stall awnings flapped, and a basket of dried chilies overturned against Kent’s knee, scattering spicy dust that clung to their sleeves. He laughed through the coughs, helping Flora brush off the flakes before the pair threaded toward the quay. The clay vessel, now complete with its final note of sea lettuce, thumped softly within her tote. They did not notice the crate sliding back into place behind them. A stray dog circled the toppled chilies, sniffed the powder once, then trotted beneath the nearest cart.
