Every morning Clara guides the narrow boat into the first lock, shoulder rolling the heavy rope, looping it over the nearest iron bollard. Yet today the rope slides differently, slick with dew collected during the night crossing. Never before has the coarse hemp felt so treacherous, and the faint shift prickles along her calluses. Water lies glass–flat inside the chamber; even the reflection of a leaning poplar appears sharper than usual, as though the canal offered an exact mirror. She leans on the gate beam, expecting the familiar give, but the hinge refuses, holding just a fraction. A tantalizing sliver of daylight shows between gate and wall, enough to suggest movement, not enough to allow it.

While water creaks against the oak boards, Clara steps into the cabin for breath. A wooden yardstick lies on the table, stained with oil near the twelve-inch mark. Years ago, someone pressed it against the pantry wall, scratching clustered lines to track growth; the wood still carries those notches. Seeing them, she cannot avoid the urge to reminisce: a child pulling heels high, craning for another quarter inch. The engine’s hum keeps time, yet each notch seems to widen the cabin’s hush. Her fingertips trace the shallow cuts, then she balances the yardstick on her palm, gauging its slight warp. Sun reaches the doorway, and dust motes bask lazily in the beam.

Clara returns to the lock. Her sleeves rolled higher, she braces her boots against the stone edge and presses the gate beam again. Seldom has the timber resisted so firmly. If the gate were lighter, the beam would swing with one push, yet water levels still differ by a handspan. She pauses, adjusts stance, then eases pressure gradually instead of thrusting. A stutter of bubbles rises; with that shift, the beam begins to move, scraping moss from the coping stones. Mid-swing she notices the yardstick, somehow slipped from the cabin and floating nearby, turning end over end like a slow clock hand. The sight startles her enough that she checks her grip before the gate thuds home.

Water equalizes, quiet replacing the earlier churn. Clara hooks the drifting yardstick, water dripping from its numerals, and holds it against the sun. What slows her is the swollen timber, not any flaw in her strength, yet the unordered marks along the stick form a different measure of time. She rests the damp wood across the roof, decides against wiping it dry, and steps to the tiller. No sooner has the stern cleared the lock than she loosens the line with deliberate slack, letting the boat glide rather than surge. Light crowds the cabin windows, and Clara allows her forearms to bask in it. The damp graduations along the wood glimmer against the canal’s dark surface.
