"Shift the bench a little," Joy said.

The cast-iron legs scraped across the damp paving beside the fountain. Eli leaned his weight forward, shoulders tight, while gravel shifted under his shoes and popped against the metal feet. The bench had been repainted in spring, and thin green stripes still flourished along its sides despite boot marks. One final push, finished with a light flourish of Joy’s wrist, nudged a thumb-sized stone toward the water. The stone plopped into the basin, rolled against the narrow grate, and lodged there. Spray kept rising, yet the usual gurgle under the surface stopped.

A growing sheet of water climbed over the stone rim, then trickled down the slope that circled the fountain. Wind from incoming clouds angled the spray, and the first raindrops dotted the gravel path like dark seeds. Two pigeons conducted a slow negotiation near a dropped crust and fluttered away when the flow reached their toes. Further downhill, leftover bunting from a recent xenial picnic sagged and dipped into the moving rivulet. The colored cloth tugged at a leaflet, released it, and the soaked paper skated across the rubber surface at the playground edge. Under the gazebo, the layered wooden architecture drummed softly as rain tapped its beams.

Water pressed onward until it brushed Eli’s ankles, cold and insistent. He crouched, fingers numb from strain, and tried to lift the wedged stone; the basin’s force pinned it. Joy stepped to a vent where warm air leaked from a maintenance furnace under the park office; she borrowed an abandoned plastic trowel warming nearby. With the tool’s narrow edge she pried, and the stone rolled free. The overflow thinned, allowing rainwater to search an easier route through the newly cleared grate. Eli exhaled, legs steady again, while the pigeons returned to the playground fence, feathers unruffled. The bench that had been dragged earlier now sat half a pace nearer the pond, and a slender thread of water kept trickling beneath its front leg toward the stepping stones.
