English 原文
The wooden seat under the pavilion stayed perfectly dry, but every other bench around the fountain still glistened with rainwater. Idris arrived first and had already unrolled his sketch pad; he needed the steady cover to draw the shifting spray. Alma reached the same spot seconds later, camera dangling, hoping to catch the amber light before the sun climbed higher. The seat, wide enough for only one tripod or a single set of elbows, became the quiet enclave both relied on. A companion animal — a small terrier on a red leash — tapped across the wet paving nearby, shaking drops from its fur. All around, fallen leaves had begun a slow decomposition, their nut-sweet scent rising with the steam from the stone.
Idris shifted, offering half the plank with a nod. Alma hesitated; the corner he offered faced the fountain directly, yet spray kept drifting there whenever the breeze turned. The fountain’s mechanism had been calibrated to arc high, and every gust bent the stream just far enough to spot the wood with tiny beads. She waited through one burst, counted another, and noticed a pattern: the pump paused for exactly three breaths whenever the hidden irrigation pipes started under the lawn. Idris had observed the rhythm as well, because he lifted his pencil only after the water thinned. Without a word, he rose during the lull and backed against the railing. Alma lowered her camera during the next surge, creating an improvised rota built entirely on timing rather than territory.
If either of them missed the lull, the spray would pepper the paper or blur the glass, so they kept swapping their places in a quiet dance. Halfway through a cycle, the pump unexpectedly fell silent; the sprinklers had not triggered, yet the fountain shrank to a trickle and stayed there. The sudden stillness allowed both tripod and sketch pad to share the bench comfortably, and they worked side by side until fresh footsteps approached. The terrier sniffed Idris’s ankle, and its leash brushed Alma’s shoe, reminding them how narrow their enclave truly was. They packed their gear before the next group arrived, leaving faint graphite dust and a damp ring from a lens cap on the honey-colored plank. Behind them, the fountain regained its arc and water kept sliding through the bright air.
