A fresh difficulty arrived minutes later. The rising upstream level pressed harder against the half-made barrier, scouring loose sand from beneath it. A fist-sized pebble rolled free, clattered over the downstream riffle, and left a widening groove where water shot through. If the branch had been longer, it would have bridged that fresh channel, but every stick within sight stopped short. She wedged the pail, now low on clay, under one corner of the stone, levering it while her knees dug into the gravel bed.
