When One Grain Held the Tower-

English 原文
Pebbles drummed in a loose rhythm as the breeze shifted them along the dry stone pile; one flat disc rang out with a higher pitch each time it rocked against its neighbour. Ned crouched and listened again, amazed that a stone could sing like a tiny bell. The disc’s surface showed a pale circle where another visitor’s tower had once pressed against it, a faint record of earlier balance attempts. That echo of effort persuaded him to test the stone for a fresh stack. He brushed its underside with a cloth, the fabric whispering across the grain, then placed it on a broad base slab. The first layer lay silent, yet the tower still rose no higher than his ankle.
Another rummage sent gravel rattling underfoot. A heavier oval from the waterline let out a muted thud when Ned laid it on his palm; one side tilted as if a secret weight hid inside. His science-club mentor had been fond of such puzzles during river stewardship workshops organised in the town square, and her voice once described density shifts like a seesaw. Remembering that, Ned rotated the oval quarter-turns until the tilt stopped and the stone fell into place with a low, sure hum. Two layers now reached mid-calf, but the tower lacked the height shown by the tallest five-layer column nearby. If a stronger gust arrived, the whole effort would lean.
A third search produced a thin tablet of slate. Ruby downstream let a flat stone skate across the water, its skips clapping out team spirit from last month’s relay chants. Timing his move between the echoes, Ned eased the slate onto the stack. For a breath nothing happened; then the combined mass pressed downward and the tower stiffened, a single grain crunch marking the exact moment it locked taller than the nearest cluster. A distant bell from the town square clock answered, carrying over the river. Ned folded the cloth and set it on the warm boulder beside him.
