English 原文

Faint confetti still dotted Ned's damp socks, reminders that last night's vanity fair had spilled into their morning. The whole escapade had already stained his trail-worn apparel with streaks of pink dye washed loose by the rain. Darla, still wearing a flimsy paper crown a cheerful partygoer had given her, leaned forward to test the mossy trunk. A small wooden pavilion waited among distant beeches, yet puddles between here and there discouraged any detour. Ned gripped a flat rock beside the trail, lifted its gritty weight against his thighs, and nudged it beside the log. The stone wobbled, held a moment, and finally gave them their first, tiny platform there.

Rain gathered pace through the canopy gap, cooling Ned's forearms while he searched the debris zone for another slab. A chunk of bark, broad as a book, had been loosened by the fall, so he dragged it onto the first rock. It pressed down the wobble, yet its wet surface still slid under Darla’s shoe when she tried a careful step. She crouched, arms braced, and murmured that one more layer would raise them high enough to swing the packs over. Far above, a wood pigeon flapped once, and the beat rolled through the wet branches like a slow drum.

Darla reached beneath the trunk, fingers finding a dry splintered root; the piece bent reluctantly, then broke free with a muffled crack. A second stone had been half buried under soaked leaves, and together they tugged it free with steady, slow pulls. Root, bark, and stone aligned, and the stack rose level with the trunk’s center line. A sudden gust drummed drops onto the moss, rinsing slime and turning the fresh root into the grippiest rung available. Ned planted one boot on the new ladder, torso balanced forward, while his hands were reaching for Darla’s waiting pack.
