Water Across the Puzzle-

English 原文
"Another corner piece goes here," Cora whispered.
The glue stick pressed against the glossy card, releasing a sweet, rubbery smell that mixed with the musty tang of cloth spines nearby. A thin film of glue shone, and the jigsaw image of book covers began to take shape on her mounting board. Rows of shelves stretched beyond the reading table like a brown horizon, while dappled rectangles of late-afternoon light warmed the wood and carried a faint, sugary aroma from a basket of donated cookies on the counter. Dusty air drifted from the ceiling vent; the chalky scent made Cora pause and wipe grit away, because the first piece had slid. She had arranged half the puzzle before the wall clock’s second hand tapped louder against its glass face.
A sharp metallic thud sounded at the book-drop slot behind her. Cora turned just in time to see a returned atlas tumble from the return cart and sprawl open, pages breathing out a stale, earthy odor. She hurried over, lifted the heavy volume, and stacked it safely. When she stepped back, the vent’s constant breeze curled a loose call-number slip that had been resting on her table. The paper fluttered, nudged a light paper cup, and the cup tilted; a ribbon of cool water poured over the edge, smelling faintly of chlorine. The stream slid across the polished surface, picked up specks of biscuit crumbs, and crept toward her waiting jigsaw pieces.
Cora reached the table just as the water touched the first glued square. If she had returned a minute later, the stream would have soaked every card. She scooped a sour-smelling blotting rag from a supply tray and pressed it against the spill. The cloth darkened; the flow thinned, then stopped. The damp edge of the mounting board now carried a foggy haze, and the softened glue let one image drift slightly, giving the finished picture an unexpected wave—almost like a rising tide frozen mid-crest. Cora adjusted the corner, breathed in the faint vinegar note of drying adhesive, and set the glue stick beside the folded rag. A thin bead of water continued to creep toward the table’s edge.
