Chirp Inside the Foam-

English 原文
Most of the patio lay quiet, but a sharp chirp burst from beneath the vice. A tiny wren darted out, its claws tapping the rubber mat, then the bird slipped behind hanging sandpaper strips that rustled. Max paused, and the steady rasp of his sanding block rose and fell like a slow bell, each shift changing pitch. When he tightened the vice, the handle rang once, a clear ding that seemed to resonate along the steel surface. Rain from last night still clung to low foliage, leaving the air cool and damp under the wavy roof. Beyond the shrubs a wide lawn, nearly a hectare across, hummed with insects while an adult swept shavings toward the steps.
Once the chirps faded, Max laid a medium-grit strip across the block and drove it forward in steady strokes. He had already smoothed two faces, yet tiny grooves still caught the edge of his fingernail near the top surface. Those ridges had been thinned by earlier passes, yet a faint hiss rose each time the block crossed them. Pressing harder made the rasp deepen, and the foam backing bent with a strain that buzzed against the grainy pine. After ten passes the scratch tone softened, so he chose the finest strip, tore it free, and swept dust aside. The tearing left a jagged corner; when he resumed, that corner scraped a faint circle exactly where the surface looked ready. He reasoned that if the strip tore again, the fine finish would disappear beneath fresh scratches. The result showed an uneven bargain; the circle marked progress, yet a shadow of the older grooves lingered nearby.
He carried the block to the touch-test zone, gripping only the unsanded edges so fingers left no print. Under the brighter lamp he compared it with the reference piece, then eased a new pass along the opposite edge. That gentle correction balanced the thickness, but it rounded every corner slightly, leaving the block smooth yet softly angled. He tilted the block toward the light, and the earlier chirp returned from somewhere near his thumb. A mottled cricket clung inside the compressed foam, its wings rubbing a rhythm that made the bench top quietly resonate. Max set the block on the drying rack, while drifting sawdust kept swirling in slow circles beneath the humming patio fan.
