English 原文
Zara pulled the cotton line until one tin can hovered over a flat sun-warmed stone, while its twin still lounged inside the wicker basket. Damp grass breathed out a freshly cut bitterness, and resin from the hedge drifted in a sticky ribbon of scent. The string had been threaded through a nail hole under the garden gate’s wooden lintel, yet brittle twigs poked the line and stole strength from the vibrations. She angled the can, quarter-turn by quarter-turn, tasting a faint metallic tang with each echo in her ear; only scattered syllables reached her from Xavier beyond the hedge. Wind rolled across the clearing like slow pepper, carrying dusty soil and the sweet fizz of dandelion sap, and every gust bowed the cotton so it brushed a leafy stem and fell silent.
A striped wasp zig-zagged toward the basket, drawn by the sugary breath escaping a glass jug of diluted cordial. Its touch rocked the jug; a small portion of pink liquid seeped over the rim, hit the stone, and crept in a thin, cool ribbon toward Zara’s shoe. The fluid soaked the string where it kissed the ground, and the sudden weight bent the already tired line until the silver glint vanished among blades of grass. If the dampened strand stayed grounded, no word would ever cross. Zara wiped the cotton with the cloth, then looped spare dry string over a higher branch that arched above the hedge like a natural lintel, lifting the telephone clear of sticky earth. The new path tightened; the can in her hand thrummed again, deeper than before. From the jug’s spill rose a fruity haze, almost a bloom of outdoor euphoria, and resinous hedge breath mixed with it into a curious orchard-wood perfume. Beyond the leaves, Xavier’s silent mouth shaped another sentence; this time the words travelled clean and hollow through the metal shell. Wind still rolled across the gap, yet each pulse now made the raised line quiver at a steady, low drone that hovered above the grass long after Zara stepped back.
