Dorian rolled a flat rock below the branch, leaned forward, and pressed his weight downward. The far end rose, the stone nudged half a hand-span, then soil collapsed and the rock fulcrum slipped. His soles slid a finger-width on wet gravel, and balance returned only when he stepped back. The small forward lurch felt less like work and more like the start of an adventure etched in mud.

He paced to the path edge, selected a wider slab, and dragged it over with slow, braced strides. If the plank locked under the branch, the stone would surely pivot as the new fulcrum settled. On the second push the branch bent even lower; joints in his shoulders burned hard. Yet the stone rolled another hand-span before the slab dug into soft ground and froze. Marks curling behind the stone sketched a silent narrative across loosened petals and damp soil. Not ready to stop, Dorian slid the first flat rock beneath the slab, stacking weight like coins. He inhaled, settled his heels, and drove the branch down once more, firmly toward earth. A sharp click of bark against wood suddenly travelled up his arms then stopped breath. At that instant the branch end sank, the fulcrum tower held, and the round stone toppled free of its hollow.

He wiped soil from his knees, weight easing across the arches of his feet as tension drained away. The stone now rested against firmer soil, its damp surface catching a wavering stripe of sunlight. “Sturdy branch, that one,” Pierce murmured, already turning back to the watering can beside him. Dorian bent to lift the empty plank; a bead of water slipped from the stacked rocks into the fresh footprint behind him.
