Rafael’s boot pressed into gravel that looked sun-baked yet gave way like soaked sand, and the mild wobble almost tipped the bright ball he balanced on his palm. Bethan, walking a step behind in the narrow passage, pointed at a gap where the ball had earlier rolled under the hedge. The twiggy wall felt prickly; every reach snagged a sleeve, and his fingers failed to grasp the rolling toy. He had tried twice, and each attempt left the ball deeper among rough sticks. Above the hedge tops, golden light struck a distant grassy knoll that sloped toward a cornfield lying flat against the lower edge of a foothill, but the view offered no hint for retrieving the stubborn ball.

A brisk gust skimmed over the maze, rustling the leaves in a sandy hiss. The moving air shook a dry, hooked branch free from the hedge; it dropped, struck the gravel, and nudged the yellow ball farther along the shadowed roots. Pebbles arranged by earlier visitors had been scattered by that same gust, so no ready marker remained. Rafael knelt, noticed the branch’s kinked tip, and paused. The hook that had just pushed the ball away matched the very twigs that kept catching his shirt. He slid the fallen branch through the hedge like a skinny fishing pole; its rough curve locked around the rubber surface, and one steady pull drew the ball back until it rested against his boot.

He wedged the hooked stick across the passage floor, forming a low barrier that blocked the corridor’s centre. Bethan tapped the rescued ball against her knee, then tucked it inside her backpack pocket. They turned toward the wider junction, gravel spraying lightly under their shoes. Behind them, the wind still streamed along the path, loose leaves tumbling against the propped branch and swirling onward toward the far hedge bend.
