English 原文
Crushed grass released a cool, peppery smell as Greer shuffled backward across the string-run corridor, testing the humming line. The diamond kite flashed bands of yellow and sky-blue while the wind leaned hard, pulling the string tight against her gloves. Ned knelt near a blanket, book open, yet chose not to participate, only raising a hand when the kite leaped higher. Another gust arrived; the reel handle caught where two coils overlapped, refusing to turn while the kite lunged sideways in the air. A loop had been pulled tight by the previous gust, creating a narrow ridge that blocked the handle. Greer leaned back, using body weight as leverage, and flicked the jammed handle forward, but only a short squeak of line escaped. The kite shuddered, lost height, and brushed the treetop level before the wind steadied enough to hold it aloft again.
She had expected the overlap to ease, yet the next surge drove the handle into her thumb and locked it again. Slack ballooned, the kite sank, and a loop brushed the grass, threatening to tangle around a thorny thistle near her boot. Greer stepped sideways toward a flat stone used as a reel bench, letting the slope assist by easing tension while she moved. She set the reel down, lifted the top coil with two fingers, then rewound it, guiding each loop with measured turns. When the next gust struck, the handle spun freely, and a clean ribbon of line streamed skyward, snapping bright under the sunlight. Ned shaded his eyes and called, "Still climbing!" yet Greer focused only on the humming tension sliding across her glove.
A sharper crosswind soon whipped in; the kite yawed left, overspinning so quickly that the reel tried to roll off the stone. Greer stamped one heel beside it, blocking the cylinder, and her other hand pinched the line until the frame steadied overhead. Cloud shadows swept across the meadow, light flickering between them like water over pebbles, while the kite regained height bit by bit. Greer had never used a simpler motion to secure equipment, yet the small adjustment now kept every part working in smooth rhythm. She breathed against the cool wind and glanced at Ned, who drew quiet pencil lines across his page. Behind the pair, a single fibre at the mid-line knot twisted free, sliding downwind toward the blue-grey grass.
