The Windlass Among the Berries -

English 原文
From the towpath Paul watched Dina arrange baskets of berries across the narrow roof, each brimmed edge shining with syrup under the noon glare.
Strawberries clung to his tongue from an earlier taste, their sweetness now mingling with the metallic tang drifting from the iron balance beam ahead.
A painted phoenix curved along the cabin door, its red-gold feathers catching high sunlight like sugar caramelising.
Beyond the prow, the next lock stood waiting, its stone shoulders rising unevenly, almost a low battlement holding the upper pound in check.
A faint coppery drizzle from the sluice paddles drifted onto his lips, tasting like pennies left overnight in rainwater.
Dina lifted another jar, tapped the lid, and laughed when the jam splashed her thumb; Paul stayed back, counting how many pots already crowded the deck.
Seldom had he tasted so many flavours in one morning, yet he still added a paper bag of citrus slices to the riot of colour.
The deck now offered a multitude of tastes, from briny olives to syrup-slick cherries; crates crowded the space, and Paul waded through them to reach the hatch.
Each step pushed skins under his boots, releasing bursts of sharp zest that pricked the back of his throat.
Dina called across the lock, "Have you found the windlass yet; the water keeps rising against the gate."
Some berries burst under the pressure, bleeding a thin syrup that slid between the boards and met the canal with a faint plop.
Paul scanned the jumble once more, then crouched, closing his eyes while the sun painted flickering shadows across his lids.
His tongue still tingling with citrus bitterness, he let fingertips hunt among the baskets, trusting coolness and shape rather than sight.
If the handle were any colder, frost would have surprised him, yet that chill now announced the windlass curled beneath a coil of rope.
He straightened, lifted it free, and wiped sticky honey from the shaft, a drop falling to the planks where wasps quickly gathered.
What mattered now was the feel of unburdened boards under his soles; the discarded jars had vanished into the cabin below, leaving space and quiet.
Rope embraced the bollard, paddles creaked open, and the boat began to rise, water swirling against the walls before settling beneath moss-dark battlements.
Moments later Paul set the windlass down and repeated the citrus-testing flick of his tongue, only this time evening air tasted of rust and wood-smoke.
