English 原文
Liora braced both feet on the dry path and leaned back against the iron handle, lifting the gate half a handspan. The murmur ahead deepened, the new rush whitening the surface where the channel narrowed. She counted—three steady beats, the rhythm trusted since mornings spent trailing her grandfather along this ditch. She trusted the water to answer within those beats, quickening or quieting on her cue. A thin line spread across the beans’ plot, covering each mound evenly, exactly as she intended during last night’s planning. The whistle at her belt, tarnished brass, dangled like a sleepy coordinator between movements of small crews scattered along the bank. Dante straightened at the next bend, meeting her glance; no whistle needed this time. Certainty settled across her shoulders as smoothly as the morning mist that licked the cool stone walls of the channel.
Mid-count on the second gate, a muffled gulp sounded under the plank, echoing in the narrow stone throat. Silt that had hugged the wall all season suddenly collapsed, slurping through the opening and leaving the timber hanging crooked. Two spillways formed, racing along opposite edges of the channel, carving grooves in drifting foam. Liora dropped a flat stone into position, hoping to consolidate the twin streams into one steady sheet. The current shrugged the stone loose, rolled it downstream, and clattered it against a moss-dark corner. Dante’s voice drifted over the water, "Still low," but the soil ahead darkened in uneven blotches. The pattern made no sense to her practiced eye; confidence thinned like mist lifting from sun-struck water.
She paced beside the water, counting bent reeds that marked previous levels, then knelt where a broken crate lay abandoned among weeds. Its slats, grey with age, still showed their grain despite weather and ash stains. She hacked away two lengths with her folding knife, intent on upcycle rather than discard, and wedged them crosswise under the gate. The makeshift dam held, yet the upstream surface burped, sending an eddy spiralling across her boots. She moved to the downstream junction, lifted another handle, and tried to synchronize the unequal flows. The channel answered with a stubborn hiss, water refusing her pattern, frogs popping from bank to bank as though mocking her private arithmetic.
Wind skimmed the field, carrying the scent of warm straw, and Liora stopped counting. Numbers had guided every dawn; they offered no comfort now, hanging uselessly like beads without string. She tilted the crate slats, stacked a second stone behind them, and let the water decide its own braid through the crooked gap. In that slackened moment she chose to reinvent the morning: not perfect distribution, only enough moisture where the earth accepted it. The murmur settled into an unfamiliar, uneven rhythm—and something in her chest settled with it. She noticed her tin lunch box, parked earlier on a sunny rock, now streaked with rusty water that had splashed during the scramble. A single drip lingered on its lid, catching light before sliding off and darkening the dust at her heel.
