English 原文
No crack split the pale stem jutting from the damp leaf mould, although the cap above sagged slightly toward its shadowed edge.
A bead of water hung motionless beneath the rim, held by surface tension that turned the drop into a trembling lens. Pascal crouched nearby, knees spreading for balance, and his spine aligned itself the way it did at his workbench. In town he adjusted pocket-watch springs; out here, the forest floor offered gears of gills and stems instead of brass wheels. Verity shifted beside him, her basket nudging his ankle, the two of them sharing the moss like coiled springs.
Above their heads, the canopy formed a ragged marquee of oak leaves that filtered the after-rain brightness. Pascal reached toward the dented cap, thumb and forefinger pinched together in the long-awaited motion learned from turning tiny screws. The stem resisted his familiar quarter-turn, and a subtle sway travelled through his torso as he braced both heels into the mulch. Instead of yielding cleanly, the flesh twisted back against him, and his centre of gravity slid forward until Verity's steady palm touched his shoulder. Their baskets knocked together; a soft clatter marked the combined bounty that had already accumulated in woven rings of fern.
He eased upright and studied the mark again, noticing how the dent opened on one side like joined twin caps. Verity murmured, "Look from underneath," yet her words stayed background noise to the angle of his neck and the tilt of his hips. He ducked, almost a waddle, bringing his nose level with the gills, and the supposed bruise revealed itself as the fuse point of two specimens. The discovery flipped his assumption: the dent signalled youth, not decay, meaning the stem would snap rather than twist away clean. On the verge of repeating the failed motion, he paused, shifted weight back, and lifted instead, letting the mushroom detach with a crisp pop.
He set the twin-capped prize into the basket's outer ring, then straightened, shoulders rolling as if resetting hidden cogs. Verity answered by tightening the basket lid; the two companions bent once more toward the moss, bodies matched in a quieter, slower rhythm. Behind them, the earlier stem stub glistened, a clean white cylinder already beading with fresh moisture where it met the earth. Pascal knelt again and tapped another glossy cap, testing its firmness with the practiced rhythm that now carried a gentler pace.
